  Google Page Creator
Google Page Creator....

What can I say about it? The company that has given us the best search engine out there, the company that gave us a mail application that's in a browser that works better than any of the other mail applications I've seen on a desktop. What can I say about this latest offering that will do it justice. Okay, here I go...

IT SUCKS!

Alright, maybe that wasn't strong enough.

IT SUCKS AND ITS A COMPLETE LET DOWN. IT'S BLOGGER.COM WITHOUT AN RSS FEED.

Here is the run down of why it sucks.

1. No RSS feeds. - Almost any page being created today has an RSS feed and all of their sample layouts seem well suited to using an RSS feed for their pages. Why then isn't there an RSS feed option at least? Beats me!

2. Must be hosted on the Google servers - I want my page hosted on my server at my address. This seems like a pretty basic feature to leave out. This is probably more of a no-brainer than the RSS feed feature was.

3. Storage size - This is Google. They give every user 2 gigs of gmail space. It might be more. I've just lost track now of how much but the company that can give that much space to it's users surely could give more than a measly 100 megs to each account. I upload 100 photo's and I've pretty much used up all the space. Lets look at Riya for example. Riya allows its users to upload gigs upon gigs of data. Same with Filefront and a bunch of other hosting services.

4. No store support - This is the feature I would have loved to have seen most. I get emails all the time from people wanting to setup some sort of store or a way to receive payments for rental properties online but typically they don't want to pay a developer the money required to develop something like that. It's not that hard to setup a store if you know what you're doing but most people don't. The page creator needs to make an easy process to setup a store payment system with nice templates for a store, or hotel or apartments connected to a database that can manage things like reservations or inventory or whatever.

5. Templates - They all look like Blogger.com templates. Basically they are I think except that often the information side that's typically on the right side of a blog is now on the left in the menu. Oh, and did I mention that they don't have RSS feeds?

6. Just a general lack of features - There are so many things I'd love to see Google do with this project. I was really hoping they would create something that the every day person could use for web development. I think the wanted to keep it simple but now its so simple that its on the verge of useless.

While Google Page Creator is supposed to be easy to use and it is, it's pretty shallow when it comes to what a person can do. They should close the beta and release it in about 6 months when they have something worth using.

There are some nice things that Google Page Creator does but it's nothing I'm amazed by. Sites like Riya and Writely are amazing sites. Google Page Creator... not yet.

Comments:
I agree with you about google page creator sucking!! I just got the invite and was so pumped and then I go and try it out and it was a big let down. I had that look on my face that kids get when they open a Christmas present and its pair socks. Very sad. I wonder if there will be a start up company that will offer a page builder that people will want to use.

Hopefully someone will make a better page creator that's browser based. I'm sure in a year Google will have something worth using but now, it just doesn't seem up to it yet. Hopefully a good startup company will make a competing product that will cause Google to fight a little harder to be the leader.
